Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89 today. Her talent spanned everything from stage to screen to television, known for a wide range of roles, including the beloved Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, and Muriel Donnelly in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as well as its sequel. She was also in The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Richard III, Sister Act, David Copperfield, and more. She won numerous awards, including two Oscars, multiple BAFTA awards, and a Tony. She’s known for playing strong-willed “spicey” women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. She was granted her title of Dame Commander in 1990. She will be deeply missed by many, including many of us here at DerpyCon.
